Welcome

Since 1998 there is a unique art and architectural center in Nagele in the Netherlands. In this museum is a permanent exhibition centered around architecture while the changing exhibition involves both architecture and art in all forms imaginable. The Nagele Exhibition Foundation is responsible for the initial plans for the museum and is helped by a large number of volunteers.

The village of Nagele in the Noordoostpolder is an outstanding example of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement (Modern Movement) in the Netherlands. This article in the book 'Diamonds in Sahara, METU Lodging Documented' gives an impression of the village and its design history, cultural heritage and current initiatives to revive its tangible and intangible legacy.

Nagele. A Modern Village on New Land
(Blom, A.M. and P.J. Timmer, ‘Nagele. A Modern Village on New Land’, in: Diamonds in Sahara, METU Lodging Documented, 2018, pp. 41-52)

The permanent exhibition

The exposition shows the beginning of Nagele and her unique role in Dutch architecture. It tells of the important role of the architects Rietveld, Merkelbach and Van Eyck. The architects of "Modern Age Building", collectively known as "De Acht" and "De Opbouw" have left their mark in Nagele.

Nowhere else in Holland can a more pure form be found of their ideas. The Nagele Museum holds documentary treasures as well as the chance to wonder through the village itself to capture a realistic view of the results of the plans made.

The exposition has been realized in co-operation with the NAI (the Dutch Architectural Society) in Rotterdam.

Changing Exhibitions

Every three months there is a different exhibition on all sorts of topics pertaining to architecture or art. The NAI helps in this by providing material and expertise.

Art Exhibitions

The Nagele Museum offers showroom to art academies, artists collectives and individual artists. Once a year the public is allowed a chance to visit an artist at work in the "Artist's Residence".

Outdoor Exhibitions

There is not only "in" but also "out" of doors much to see in Nagele. As previously mentioned a walk through Nagele is very worth while, and at the same time the areas around the museum offer artists the chance for exhibiting their larger projects to the public.
